Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a business intelligence developer? Let me share my experience and a typical work day in my life.

It’s time to dive into my daily routine as a business intelligence developer and see what I do!

Every morning, I wake up early to kick-start my day. After a quick breakfast, I go to my office, ready to tackle the challenges that await me.

Once I arrive, I start by checking my emails and addressing any urgent issues that require immediate attention. So I can prioritize my tasks for the day and ensure I’m on top of any critical matters.

After starting the very first tasks in my morning routine, below are what I’m going to do next during my workday:

Check the Logs

One of the most important tasks I undertake at the beginning of each day is thoroughly examining the logs.

As a business intelligence developer, I must remain vigilant and attentive to any incidents or anomalies during the previous night. I can detect and promptly resolve potential issues by meticulously analyzing the logs.

This meticulous approach guarantees the seamless operation of data pipelines. Consequently, it provides the organization with reliable and precise data for informed decision-making.

Interview With the Business

One of my job’s most exciting and fulfilling aspects is the opportunity to collaborate and work closely with various stakeholders across different departments within the organization.

I collaborate with the marketing team, finance department, and operations team, among others. During the collaboration, I conduct in-depth interviews with these stakeholders to understand their data requirements.

You may wonder about the purpose of these interviews, right? From my experience, I can look at the specific metrics and reports they rely heavily on to inform their decision-making processes.

In addition, interviews with the business can help me identify gaps or areas for improvement within my current business intelligence solutions.

Have a Stand-Up

As a member of an agile development team, I actively participate in the daily stand-up meetings. Why do I need to attend these meetings?

That’s because I see these meetings as a platform for my team to come together and discuss our progress, share challenges we face, and plan our tasks for the workday ahead.

Additionally, during these stand-ups, I take the opportunity to provide detailed updates on the various business intelligence projects that I’m working on.

Moreover, I seek feedback from my team members and offer my support and assistance to anyone who needs it.

I can stay aligned with the rest of the development team by actively engaging in these stand-up meetings.

Write the ETL

Once the stand-up is over, I dive into one of the most crucial tasks of a business intelligence developer – writing the ELT (Extract, Transform, Load) process.

It’s when I gather data from various sources, cleanse and transform it into a format suitable for analysis, and load it into the data warehouse or data lake.

What skills do I need to write the ETL scripts? I must have technical skills and business understanding. I also work with stakeholders to understand their data requirements and design the most efficient ETL workflows.

Create a Model

After completing the EFT, I unleash my creativity and create data models. During this process, I design the structure of databases and data warehouses, define relationships between tables, and optimize the data for efficient querying and analysis.

What are essential skills to create data models? They include understanding the business domain and translating complex data into meaningful insights.

In addition, I constantly refine and enhance the models based on feedback and changing business requirements.

Develop Reports and Dashboards

Once the data model is in place, I create reports and dashboards. What do I often do to complete this task? I use business intelligence tools to design visually appealing, interactive reports that provide stakeholder insights.

The next step is gathering requirements from many business teams to understand their key metrics and create compelling visualizations that tell a story.

Whether sales analytics or customer behavior analysis, I try to present data in a way that is easy to understand.

Give Support

As a part of business intelligence development, I often support the stakeholders. How do I support these individuals?

I provide training sessions to help them navigate the reports and dashboards effectively. I pay attention to their feedback and improve the user experience.

I find timely support essential for stakeholders to rely on the data and confidently make informed decisions.
