Responsibilities of AI ethicists

A typical day in my life as an AI ethicist is relatively busy with many tasks involved. I will share with you my work routine, from the moment I wake up to after I finish my work.

Morning Routine

Like any other professional, I start my day by following a morning routine that helps me prepare for the day ahead. I wake up early to have time to get ready and have a healthy breakfast. After getting ready, I go to the office and perform my morning routine as an AI ethicist.

Go to the Office

After going to the office, I settle at my desk and take a few minutes to prepare for the workday. I review my to-do list and prioritize the tasks to which I must pay immediate attention. This good habit lets me stay organized and focused throughout a busy workday.

Check Emails

Next, I dive into my inbox to see if any urgent emails require my attention. I often receive many emails. It can be inquiries about ethical guidelines for AI development to request for reviewing existing AI systems.

As an AI ethicist, I must respond promptly to these emails. That’s because they often affect critical decisions that impact the ethical implications of AI.

Keep Up With the News

Staying updated with the latest developments in AI is essential for an AI ethicist. I spend much time reading articles, research papers, and industry updates in my morning work routine. So I can stay informed about technologies and ethical challenges.

This activity helps me keep up with emerging trends, debates, and best practices. It also informs my work and enables me to provide valuable insights to my team and clients.

Join Team Meeting

Besides the activities above, my morning routine will be incomplete without me joining the team meeting. It is a time when my team discusses ongoing projects and shares updates.

During team meetings, we also collaborate on tackling ethical challenges. We can exchange ideas, seek feedback, and align our efforts toward promoting ethical AI practices.

Audit Existing AI Systems

I end my morning routine by auditing existing AI systems to assess their ethical implications. While performing audits, I evaluate the AI algorithms’ decision-making processes, data inputs, and potential biases.

I can identify and rectify ethical shortcomings through thorough audits, ensuring AI systems align with ethical guidelines.

Afternoon Routine

In the afternoon, I must complete many tasks. Here are the activities I often carry out for a productive afternoon routine:

Lunchtime

I appreciate a good lunch break to recharge and fuel for the rest of my workday. While having delicious meals, I engage in meaningful conversations with colleagues from different departments.

These conversations allow me to gain insights into different perspectives and understand the implications of AI in many fields.

Attend Workshop

After a satisfying lunch, it’s time for me to attend a workshop. I find that workshops are fundamental in my workday.

After attending workshops, I can stay informed about the industry’s latest research, best practices, and ethical challenges.

Discuss New Projects

I often participate in meetings in the afternoon to discuss new projects and initiatives. These discussions involve cross-functional teams, such as AI researchers, engineers, and business stakeholders.

During the conversation, my colleagues and I share our ideas, concerns, and insights, ensuring we approach projects from various ethical perspectives.

Collaboration among cross-functional teams enhances the quality of our work and helps us identify and minimize ethical risks related to AI technologies.

Work With Other Teams

As an ethicist, my role extends beyond my immediate team. I often collaborate with other teams, such as developers and data scientists, to embed ethical considerations into the development process.

During collaboration, we conduct meetings, provide guidance, and review the ethical implications of the work. So we can ensure AI systems are efficient and aligned with human values and societal needs.

After Work

What activities do I often do after work? Besides relaxation, here are the things I perform after a hard-working day as an AI ethicist:

Reflect The Work

As the workday ends, it’s time for some reflection. I take time to think about the projects I’ve worked on throughout my workday, my decisions, and their impact on society.

I see that reflecting on my work helps me identify areas where I can improve and ensures that I align my actions with my ethical values.

Prepare for the Next Day

After ending my workday, I prepare for the tasks the next day. I often review my work schedule, prioritize tasks, and prepare well for upcoming meetings or workshops.

This preparation allows me to hit the ground running the following day. It also ensures I can maximize my time as an AI ethicist.
